"Listen to the water... things keep breaking down"

Up North, but not too far North, in Missouri where I grew up, it only snows a few times a year. But when it does snow, or when it rains and freezes, everything is transformed. The ground, the trees, all the houses and plants and roads look different and magical. (Assuming you don't have to drive in the stuff).

The constant rain has done the same thing here. Lawns and fields have become ponds, some as deep as a foot or more. There are little streams, actually continously flowing water making little waterfalls over sculptured bits of campus ground. A drainage ditch has turned into a stream, complete with fish[01] which swim downditch and burrow into the grass when you try to catch them.

My thesis right now is sketchy and impractical. I have to get back in the zone. Wake up and drop some dolphin whistles on the stereo, read all my papers, take notes, copy more. Take breaks only to walk to the bay and stare at the gray water, looking for dark dorsal shapes breaking the surface. Gotta get organized. I want a bulletin board, and some hanging folders. My exercise should be swimming, my recreation Ecco: Defender of the Future. Read some popular books glorifying the profession to get inspired. Total immersion, it's the only way through. I cleared myself the time, I gathered myself the resources, the experiences. Gotta live the dream.

Of course, I'm still a college student, so there's a little time for partying. We're having a house-warming party tomorrow night, with Charspider here. And tonight, of course, is Arcanologist's LARP. Any excuse to wear my wings.

But elsewise! Every other moment I'll be dedicated, involved. Onward, and downward.

  • [01] Walking catfish, Clarius batrachus. They're invasive from Thailand, brought over for aquarists who then realized they didn't want them, as the catfish readily eat a variety of other fish. Like other catfish, they're spikey, so don't grab them.
